As a worshipping community of Christ we come under the empowering influence of the Holy Spirit. In the first chapter of the Book of Acts, Jesus says to the disciples, "You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth" (Acts 1:8). And the rest of the Book of Acts is a spelling out of what happened when that power came upon them.

They received power to discover their true identity as children of God and brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ. They received power to be healed of all kinds of physical and emotional disorders. They received power to discern what they needed to do with their lives. But, more than that, they received power to set the world on fire with the Good News of the Risen Christ. They were given such power that at one point in the Book of Acts those first disciples are referred to as "men who have turned the world upside down."

A newspaper reporter passed the large street-level windows of a branch of the New York City Public Library. He noticed that a man on the other side of the window was reading the morning paper. And, he was delighted to see that the newspaper was open to the page on which there was a big article he had written the day before. The reporter stopped in his tracks -- and watched through the window. Would the man be interested enough to read the entire article? The writer's nose pressed up against the glass. Would the man turn to the page where they story was continued? Several minutes passed, and nothing happened. Was the man deep in thought about what he already had read of the article? Several more minutes passed. Then the writer stepped around for a good view of the man's face -- and eyes. That was when he discovered that the man had fallen asleep.1
