The beloved author and poet Khalil Gibran wrote, "You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give." For Christians, there is no greater example of this definition of true giving than what is written in today's Lesson: "God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son" (John 3:16).

In the Gospel of John, we find over and over again the Good News of the kind of full life that God wants to give us because He loves us so much. Through Jesus Christ, He is offering us the full life that, deep down inside, we want for ourselves, for those we love and for the world. This full life is a gift, and it is a real possibility. At this very point in your life, you can become the beautiful, creative, unique, person God created you to be. That's what John's Gospel is all about. But the gift is only for those who are willing to pay the cost. And by "cost" we do not mean something you can buy. No! By "cost" we mean that there are certain conditions necessary to ready ourselves to receive the gift.

The oft-quoted American inspirational writer William Arthur Ward shared his personal style of giving with these words. "My hobby is giving something away every day -- something tangible -- so that I will be reminded to give away the vastly more important intangible: a smile, a word of encouragement, a healing touch, an earnest prayer.

"Every day I give away something," he said. "It may be a book or a poster or a flower or a poem or a card with an inspirational message -- something that might serve to enrich the life of the person receiving the gift. I may not be a person of great wisdom, but this I know: the more I give to others, the more I have. I have an inner peace that comes from the assurance that truly it is better to give than to receive."
