Sermon Week Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Cycle A

Scripture Summary Matthew 13:44

A New York City pastor recalls what happened one fateful Sunday morning as the choir took its customary walk down the Church's center aisle toward their benches in the sanctuary:

There is an iron grate in the middle of that center aisle, directly over the boiler in the basement. During the week, something got stuck in the grate and the sexton had to remove it in order to get the object out. But, unfortunately, he forgot to fasten the grate down when he put it back. Thus, potential disaster lurked the following Sunday morning when the choir began its walk down the aisle. To make matters worse, because a fuse had burned out, the lights over the middle aisle were off. In the semi-darkness, the altos got past the grate okay. However, one of the sopranos managed to get her high heel stuck in the grate. Using quick wits, she stepped out of her shoe and continued walking on down the aisle without missing a beat.

The observant tenor behind her quickly swept down in one fluid motion and retrieved the lost shoe. But, as he picked the shoe up, the whole grate came with it! Not about to be thrown off stride, he continued walking down the aisle, shoe and grate in hand.

The bass, who saw none of this, followed the tenor. He took two strides forward and disappeared into the basement. Luckily, the only thing he hurt was his pride.

"Walk while you have the light, or the dark will overtake you," Jesus said to His disciples. (Jn. 12:35).

Anyone who walks with Jesus is walking right into the Kingdom of Heaven -- that state of being which Jesus tells us in today's Gospel Lesson, is like "treasure hidden in a field...a pearl of great value" (Mt. 13:44,45). The person who finds such a treasure, Jesus says, goes off happy, sells everything he or she owns, and buys the field. And the person who finds the pearl of great value likewise goes out and sells everything he or she has and buys it.
