Title: God Loves an Eccentric
Scripture: Matthew 22:15-21
Isaiah 45:1,4-6; Psalms 96:1,3-5,7-10; I Thessalonians
1:1-5; Matthew 22:15-21
"
Give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God
what belongs to God" (Matthew 22:21).
A teenage
girl left for school wearing one yellow and one orange
sock ...
Her mother, noticing this, headed
her off at the front door. "Why are you wearing two
different colored socks?" she asked. The teenager
responded, "I
have a right to be different if I want to." Then
she added, "Besides, all the kids at school are
doing it!"
A man who always wore matching socks
had been given cause to wonder whether or not he
was a conformist.
He said
the following ...
Today a friend called me eccentric.
People have called me all sorts of things over the years,
but . . .

Title: Seeing Eye-To-Eye
Scripture: Matthew 22:34-40
Exodus 22:20-26; Psalms 18:2-4,47,51;
I Thessalonians 1:5-10; Matthew 22:34-40
"This is the greatest and the first commandment"
(Matthew
22:38).
The former pastor of the Riverside Church
in New York City was fond of telling the story of an elderly
woman
parishioner who had acquired an immense dislike for
him. Worse yet, she spent a great deal of her time conveying
these feelings to others in the parish ...
The pastor
knew this and he dreaded the day when his parish calls
inevitably would lead to her door.
Finally, the day came when his visitation schedule led
him to her building. He paced up and down in front
of the building, trying to work up the courage to go
in,
hoping that she would not be at home so that he could
just leave his card.
Then he went in and knocked on the
woman's door. No answer! Again he knocked. Again, no
answer! He knocked a third
time and heard a faint sound inside, but no one came
to the door.
Then he knelt down and peered through
the keyhole to see if anything was wrong. "Maybe the poor
woman had a seizure of some kind and needs help," he
said to himself.
But, as he stared through the keyhole, to his surprise,
he saw an eye staring back. Then he heard the woman say,
with a chuckle, "This is the first time we have
seen eye-to-eye." To which the pastor replied, "Yes,
and we had to get down on our knees to do it."
Two
thousand years ago, even among . .

Title:Identify Yourself
Scripture: Matthew 23:1-12
Malachi 1:14-2:2,8-10; Psalms
131:1-3; I Thessalonians 2:7-9,13; Matthew 23:1-12
"The
greatest among you must be your servant"
(Matthew
23:11).
On a busy summer afternoon in New York City's Times
Square, two men, only a few feet apart carry two very different
forms of identification cards. The first man proudly offers
his as payment for a fine meal in a trendy restaurant.
It's the "Black Centurion Credit Card" offered
by invitation only to an elite group of customers. As the
hype promises, the card provides "whatever you need,
whenever you need it." The card identifies the man
as a member of that exclusive club that says, "I've
made it. I've arrived." Just outside the restaurant
on a nearby busy street corner, another rather different
card is offered as identification to passersby as the second
man, homeless, receives donations. Now common in many of
America's large cities, the laminated photo ID is required
for admission into soup kitchens and homeless shelters.
In today's Gospel Lesson, Jesus says "The greatest
among you must be your servant." Then He adds, "Anyone
who exalts himself will be humbled, and anyone who humbles
himself will be exalted" (Mt. 23:11-12).
Matthew has clearly described Jesus' life ministry in terms
