Dear fellow preacher:

Late Thursday I returned from the conference to find two messages from Pastor Steve on the old answering machine:

"Hi, it's Steve - hoping to catch you before you leave for the meeting. Speak to you soon."
Six messages later...

"It's Steve again," sounding more than a little frazzled. "When you get in, can you give me a quick call? I'm really stuck here."

As soon as I heard his voice, I knew exactly what he was wrestling with.

We met for lunch on Friday so I could help get him "unstuck."

"Sometimes it just flows," he said, "but every now and then I hit the wall like I did the other night when I called. I started this sermon half a dozen times and I'm no further along than I was at the beginning of the week. And you wouldn't believe what a week it's been!"

"A classic case of inspiration block" I said. "It's there, you just need to unstick what's stuck."

I opened my briefcase and we got to work.

The following Thursday Steve called again and this time I was there to answer.

"Hey, did you get my e-mail?" he asked. "I was so pleased with the way the sermon turned out, and the congregation really seemed engaged. Thanks so much for your help. It was a joy, and you made the process easy."

"Well, you're the one who did all the work," I assured him. "It's what I do whenever I need a little push. Like when I was in seminary -- anytime I hit the wall I'd refer to my collection of the classic preachers, and it would get my own writing flowing. And that's still the way I look for inspiration, like Sunday Sermons Online. When I told you about it last Friday and shared a few sermons from the web site, I noticed it really got you going! I've always know that you preach to great effect - but there's always room to become more effective . . . "

Yes, last week I helped Steve become a more effective preacher -- and now I'd like to do the same for you.
